Abstract
The Survey of Adult Skills, conducted within the framework of the PIAAC Programme (Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies), carried out by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), is designed to measure the cognitive skills in literacy, numeracy, and adaptive problem solving of the adult population in many countries around the world, including Italy. These skills, understood as key information-processing skills, play a significant role in many aspects of people’s lives. High levels of skills, in addition to bringing advantages in the labour market, enable people to make more informed choices regarding their lifestyle, health care, expenditure and saving behaviours, and engagement in political and social life. The Report “PIAAC - Cycle 2. Cognitive Skills in Italy in the International Context” presents the main findings from the second cycle of the Survey of Adult Skills, analysing the quantity and dynamics of skills, as well as the socio-demographic characteristics of the population that most frequently determine variabilityin the set of skills and professional and social outcomes, that result from different investments in human capital. The Report aims to present the elements required to understand the situation in Italy within the global comparative framework of the countries participating in PIAAC.
