Abstract

Using the available national literature and statistics (Inps; Istat; Inapp) on care loads, recourse to support services, and finally on gender, aging and professional needs, this contribution analyses the process of “re-familiarization " of the functions of care within the relationship between families and services, reflecting on limits and resources that can be identified in the current Mediterranean welfare model, characterized by prevalence of pension expenditure and monetary support to families compared to that for services. The hypothesis of a possible paradigm shift of the mandate towards care professions is proposed: from individualized policies, based on a diagnostic-rehabilitative and substitutive-compensatory approach, towards an integrative and community-oriented approach to the questions posed by non self-sufficiency.
